The Song In My Head When I Woke Up: "New Soul" by Yael Naim

I was introduced to this song the way most of us probably were: the 2008 MacBook Air envelope reveal commercial. At that time, I was a huge Apple fanboy and watching their keynotes was genuinely one of the highlights of my year (kind of dark times for me). I was instantly gaga over the sexy, sleek design. It was the first computer I had tech-lust for, despite the unimpressive performance specs. But it was expensive, and I was working a menial job at the time. It wouldn't be until at least the next revision that I could buy one, but at least it was an entry model with an SSD, my first.

But before I bought one, I watched the commercial over and over. When I finally got the computer, I did a couple of things to 'recreate' the ad for myself. I did buy "New Soul" on iTunes (it was kind of a tradition of mine to buy whichever song Apple used in the commercial for whichever iPod I bought). And then I sourced a large envelope from work so I could slide the laptop in and out (again, dark times for me). Actually, when it was time to buy a protective travel case for the computer, I bought one that mimicked that envelope, but in a soft faux leather.

As for the song, yeah, it's cute.

Also, this post was written on an 11-inch 2015 MacBook Air. Just last night, I erased the Linux install and rolled back to Monterey so that I could use iA Writer. Now I realize how that song slipped into my subconscious. Yes, I just now realized this. That's kind of a relief.
